LESSON 5

Cause and result

Explain why something happened and what followed, with more than because and so.

01

The idea

Raters reward variety. Instead of because and so every time, choose the structure that fits the grammar after it.

Because, since and as take a clause. Because of, due to and owing to take a noun. So + adjective + that and such (a) + noun + that show a strong result. Therefore, as a result and consequently start a new sentence or follow a semicolon.

The pattern

  • Because / Since / As + clause, main clause
  • Because of / Due to / Owing to + noun, main clause
  • so + adjective + that · such (a) + adjective + noun + that
  • Sentence; therefore, / as a result, + sentence
