LESSON 3
Conditionals
Talk about possibilities, advice and regrets with if, unless and provided that.
01
The idea
A conditional sentence links a condition to a result. The verb tenses change with how real the situation is.
First conditional (real future): if + present, will. Second (unreal present): if + past, would. Third (unreal past): if + had + past participle, would have + past participle. Unless means if not; provided that and as long as mean only if.
The pattern
- If + present, will + verb (likely)
- If + past, would + verb (imagined now)
- If + had + past participle, would have + past participle (imagined past)
- Unless / Provided that / As long as + present, will + verb
